Does it show nothing at all ?

Can you transmit (does the red light come on, on top of the housing ?)

There are 2 ribbon cables that connect the board to the display head. It may be as simple as one cable has come off.

Download the service manual, which will tell you how to take apart the radio (its a simple operation). then check the ribbon cables.

Failing that, I think a replacement display is only £20

Nothing at all on the display. Yes the red light does come on when keyed.
Thanks for that, I will have a look inside it later

Having looked inside I've found it to be a right mess. Some herbert has broken the clamp for the ribbon cable on the main board and stuck it in with Sellotape.  The small cable has tape on it too. Both ribbon cables look like they may have breaks in them.
Looks like I've been sold a duffer here.
Does anybody want to buy it for spares or repair ?
