GP340 Programming problem

We have been using CP040's for a while now and I have no trouble programming them with the 4 way RIBless cable.  The problem is we have a job coming up that is outside and muddy so I dug out our old GP340's, I am using CPS GP/GM 300 R03.10.03 and I cant read any of my 340's. All i get is a pop up box with "cannot create unknown radio component" I get the same message if i try to write a stored code plug to the radio, very frustrating as I can do my 040's with my eyes closed.

a) Is it that the 340's need flashing
b) I am i doing something wrong as its been a while since i have programmed 340's
c) Does it sound like these units have bricked while in storage

Any guidance would be useful.

Are the radio's powering up? They need to be on to read/write and hold a decent charge in order to be written. The batteries could well be 'knackerd' if they have been stored for long periods in the wrong conditions.

Have you checked all of the COM port settings in the CPS to make sure you have selected the correct port? As you say it could be that the codeplug is too old for the CPS. Is this the same CPS version you have always used to programme the units, or it this a new version?

There are a few variables, double check and let us know.

Radios and Batteries have been stored in Peli cases in the office, batteries speperate from radios, charged them all fully before trying to program them.

The CPS is newer, it is R03.10.03 the labels under the batteries display VER NOS: R03.1102, R03.01.10, R02.00.27, R03.10.03, we have a mixture going back several millenia :-)

I can understand why some of them come up with that pop up but not the last ones, we have 2 we bought about 21/2 years ago the other 8 are a mixture.

I have even checked the PP3 battery connected to the leads and thats new, I get the red and the green LED when the radios are off but once i turn them on i only get the red one.

stumped to be honest.

Some one told me that because i am running windows 7 that was was the problem!!! i thought they were pulling my leg or is this true?

win 7 64 bit is a no no. It wont work on it.

Ahh... Windows 7 64 bit does seem to be causing an issue! The 32 bit version seems to be fine though.

I don't use the same programming cable as you i afraid, so wouldn't know what the flashing LED's indicate. Is this the software you have used before, and I'm guessing you have never flashed the radios to a newer firmware version? So I theory there is no variable, apart from maybe a laptop/PC upgrade... Which could be the problem if you are running 64 bit version of Windows 7.

If the CPS is newer it should be able to read the radios, when it's the other way round is when it goes wrong!

This certainly sounds like a PC problem rather than a radio problem. Have you maybe got an old laptop/PC you could try the CPS on (XP would be ideal)?

I will dig out my old laptop which runs XP.  If that doesn't work I may be ordering a new dedicated 340 lead.

If that fails I guess eBay will be getting a listing for radio or swap for 040's

If you are able to do it (ie running pro or ultimate), a 32bit windows 7 virtual machine running on a host with a 64 bit version of win7 works perfectly well for programming the GP series. I have used it with both a real serial port connection and a usb emulated serial port to program with the cps and to flash upgrade. Make sure you are using either genuine cables or very very good aftermarket ones though, but that apples to whatever setup you use.
